STATEMENT FROM THE LABOUR PARTY
The acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu has assured the Labour Party that INEC will look into the demand for the upload of party’s candidates for the FCT Area Council elections.
The INEC Chair who spoke with the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure on Tuesday at the INEC headquarters during the quarterly Consultative meeting between the commission and the leadership of the political parties in Nigeria assured that she will “look into the matter.”
The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure and the National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim were in attendance as the authentic and recognized leadership of the Labour Party.
Abure however congratulated the INEC’s acting chairman, Mrs, Agbamuche Mbu on her recent appointment and her leadership of the electoral commission.
In paying tribute to the acting chairman, the Labour Party chairman while appreciating her stated that once lawyers are on the saddle of leadership, it reduces, and sometimes brings to an end impunity and injustice to the system.
He said that once lawyers are in the saddle, of course institutions are built and even democracy will continue to grow. This is exactly what has played out in the affairs of the party leadership.
The party appreciates the formal recognition of the leadership of Barrister Julius Abure and as well commended INEC for obeying the court order.
Abure however pleaded with the leadership of INEC to release the code for the upload of candidates for the FCT Area Council election.
According to him, “The party followed due process, issued notices to INEC, conducted primaries and the list is with the INEC. We therefore urge INEC to release the code to us so that we can upload our candidates and join in the ongoing campaign for the Area Council election.”
The chairman believes that under this leadership, INEC will do better, perform better, creditably, effectively, constitutionally and in accordance with the rule of law, which no doubt will strengthen democracy and prepare the ground for better outcome in the coming 2027 general election.
The meeting was attended by all the 18 national Chairman and National Secretaries as well as INEC commissioners.
